Souper Bowl and Mardis Gras Community
Meal and Party
Sunday, February 3
On Sunday, February 3, we will be throwing
another party for the community—and we invite everyone to join the fun! A rare constellation
of events have converged to make that the perfect day for a party: It is the last
Sunday before Lent, a traditional time for fun and games; it is also the day of the
Super Bowl, another “traditional” time for revelry.
For many years, youth groups around the country have
turned the Sunday of the Super Bowl into a “Souper Bowl of Caring,” a day to collect
money for charities that work against hunger. In 2007, this event generated $8,133,612!
This year, we have decided to join in the fun by not only collecting money and canned
goods, but also serving a hot meal to all our members, friends, and neighbors in this
corner of Denver. Our youth will collect offerings and serve the meal, to which the
congregation is invited to come and bring friends! We will also have winter clothes
and toiletries available to be given away.
But that’s not all…The last Sunday before Lent is
a great day to have fun, so we will have games and activities for the little ones.
And… what says “fun” like lighting stuff on fire?!
We will offer folks an opportunity to join in an ancient tradition—the burning of
the palm fronds from last year’s Palm Sunday to prepare ashes for Ash Wednesday. In
addition, we will invite folks to write words about sin, confession, and personal
brokenness on pieces of paper to be added to the fire.
If you would like to help out in any way— set up,
clean up, cooking, providing Crock- Pots, donating winter items or toiletries, etc.,
please don't hesitate to talk with Pastor Jay or Courtney in the office. Thank you!
