“Church History: The Institution and The Faith”

All are welcome!

From January 6 through February 3, we will explore together some of the crucial moments in the history of the church. The format will include a brief presentation on a historical event or period (e.g., when the church became the religion of the Roman Empire), and then open conversation about how that moment in the history of the institution raises important questions, concerns, ideas, and challenges that can inform a living faith today. If you have moments/periods in church history that are of particular interest to you, please talk with Pastor Jay so we can form the content of the class together. Some suggested themes

include:

• From Acts to Constantine: Church, State, and “the institution”
• Women in church history and how we “theologize” the “other”
• Reformation and the struggle for the “center,” the “edges,” and how to tell the difference
• Postmodernism and the return of “sacred story” and “ancient rites”
•  Religion and the “New World”: American

faith and values

These are only suggestions… bring your own! Every time we begin a new study is a great time for new people to join the fun!
